Escaped Bronx Zoo Peacocks Keep Neighbors Busy: Report

MORRIS PARK, NY — Some strutting escapees from the Bronx Zoo kept residents of a Morris Park neighborhood on their toes Monday.

A muster of peafowl — a mix of five peacocks and peahens — was found wandering around at the Morris Park train station on Paulding Avenue around 9:30 a.m., ABC7 Eyewitness News reported.

The birds had apparently made good on their zoo escape overnight or in the early morning hours, traveling all the way to Morris Park. The birds, which roam the zoo freely, have been known to wander off from time to time.

Several neighbors helped protect the birds from traffic while alerting zoo and police authorities about the birds' whereabouts.

"There's one that like really gave them a lot of trouble like going from rooftop to rooftop," neighbor Harry Phillips told Eyewitness News. "I just I made a phone call. I tried to keep eyes on it, and it was the zoo, the city, the NYPD, our neighbors who let the NYPD into their yards, and you know, everybody trying to keep an eye on them and make sure they're safe."
