Commission 'Deeply Troubled' About Targeted Abington Asians

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA —The Abington Township Human Relations Commission said it is "deeply troubled" by recent burglaries targeting the homes of Asian American business owners.

"These incidents are not only criminal acts but also reflect a disturbing trend of racially motivated discrimination that we unequivocally condemn," the ATHRC stated in a Facebook post. "The homes of Asian Americans being targeted is based on harmful stereotypes is a clear violation of the principles of equality and justice that we strive to uphold."

Under Abington Ordinance 2029, the ATHRC is committed to ensuring that no one in our township faces discrimination in housing, employment, or public accommodations.

Abington Township Police said on July 31, a home was burglarized in the 1300 block of Carol Road in the township's Meadowbrook section. The burglary occurred during the day when no one was home, police said.

On Aug. 6, another break-in occurred in the unit block of Lee Lynn Lane in the township's Huntingdon Valley section.

The ATHRC supports the ongoing efforts of the Abington Police Department to address this crime trend and urges all residents to take the recommended preventive measures seriously.

The commission said it is also encouraging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

"The ATHRC recognizes the inherent dignity and worth of all people. We stand in solidarity with our Asian American residents, especially during this challenging time. The targeting of these individuals and their families based on race or ethnicity is unacceptable, and it underscores the need for continued vigilance and community support.

The ATHRC is dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all residents. We will continue our work in education, mediation, and outreach to combat discrimination in all its forms and to promote the provisions of Abington Ordinance 2029.
