Newtown Trumpets In The Season With Weekend Packed With Events

Tree lighting, house tour, chili luncheon and a holiday parade highlight the festive schedule of events.

NEWTOWN, PA — Newtown will usher in the season with a weekend packed with events, all culminating in a big holiday parade through town on Sunday.

The events kickoff with the town’s annual tree lighting on Friday, Dec. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Newtown Fire Association, 14 Liberty Street.

Sponsored by the Newtown Experience, festivities will include music by the Goodnoe Elementary School Choir, the Council Rock North Choir, and BC Discoveries Dance and Theater Arts Company. Afterwards, hot chocolate and cookies will be available inside the fire house.

Santa is scheduled to arrive around 7 p.m. aboard an antique fire truck. Afterwards, children are invited to visit with Santa on the porch of the fire station.

The holiday fun continues on Saturday Dec. 2 with the 60th Newtown Historic Association's Holiday House Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The self-guided walking tour will feature five private residences and six public buildings, including the Friends Home and Village, Anthony Petsis and Associates, Stocking Works, the Newtown Fire Association, the Newtown Library Co., the NHA Callahan Research Center and the Court Inn.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the Newtown Book & Record Exchange, 102 S. State Street, and on-line at the association’s website, www.newtownhistoric.org/housetour.

The cost is $35 for non-members and $30 for members in advance and $40 on the day of the tour. A ticket includes entry into the Half-moon Inn, home to the Newtown Historic Association. Once inside this beautifully restored 18th century building, tour-goers will enjoy period musical entertainment, hearthside colonial cooking demonstrations and more.

On the day of the tour, tickets can be purchased at the Half-Moon Inn, 105 Court Street and at the Stocking Works, 301 South State Street, Newtown. For additional information, call the Newtown Historic Association at 215-968-4004 or visit the website.

All proceeds from the tour benefit the Newtown Historic Association and its programs dedicated to the preservation of Newtown’s historical heritage.

Also on Saturday, Dec. 2 the Newtown Presbyterian Church will be hosting its annual Chili Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch includes chili (meat of vegetarian), salad, cornbread, beverage and dessert. The public is invited to eat in or take out. The cost is $14 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds benefit the maintenance and
beautification of the Historic Presbyterian Church.

St. Luke’s Church on Washington Avenue in Newtown also presents a Christmas Charity Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event features a hot luncheons, Silent Auction, Raffle Baskets, Bake Table, White Elephant Sale, Vendors and Fellowship. Proceeds will Newtown to usher in the holiday season with weekend celebration.

Newtown Holiday Parade

The weekend reaches a holiday crescendo on Sunday, Dec. 3 when the annual NBA/McCaffrey’s Food Markets Newtown Holiday Parade steps off at 2 p.m. from the Stocking Works and heads north on State Street to Washington, Washington to Sycamore and Sycamore to Durham Road where the parade concludes.

Presented by the Newtown Business Association, the parade will feature the Council Rock North and South marching bands, string bands, floats, community groups and much more. The judging will take place on North Sycamore Street next to the Green Parrot Restaurant.

Parking Restriction Waived

To encourage shopping throughout the holiday season, the Newtown Borough Council has waived parking restrictions in the municipal lots from Thursday to Sunday through Dec. 31. Parking restrictions will continue to be enforced Monday to Wednesday and also at the designated 30 minute parking spots.
