Scam Costs Woman $80K, Teen Charged With Assault: Newtown Twp. Police

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department reported the following calls between July 29 and July 31:

July 29

  • At approximately 7:45 p.m. police conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a Mercedes for committing a vehicle code violation at the Newtown Bypass and Lower Silver Lake Road. As a result of the investigation, drug paraphernalia was discovered and seized as evidence and the driver received traffic and non-traffic citations.

  • A Newtown Township resident contacted police around 1 p.m. to report an incident of fraud. Her Apple laptop screen was frozen so she called a phone number that she thought was Apple Support. After back-and-forth messages with this supposed support team, she sent numerous transactions in increments of $10,000 and $15,000, hoping that the money would be refunded and her laptop would be fixed. She lost approximately $80,000 before realizing that it was a scam.
  • Police were dispatched to the area of the Newtown Shopping Center around 3:15 p.m. for the report of an assault. As a result of the investigation, a male juvenile was taken into custody and charged with simple assault.

July 31

  • At approximately 7:15 p.m. police were dispatched to a Newtown Township residence for the report of a dispute. As a result of the investigation, a woman was taken into custody on an active arrest warrant from the Bucks County Sheriff’s Department and transferred without incident.
