NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — In preparation for the next phase of renovations at the historic Newtown Theatre on North State Street, the theatre will be offering its old balcony seats for sale on a first come, first serve basis.

The seats, installed in the 1930s with fabric that dates to the 1970s, will be available for purchase from noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2. This is the only day and time the seats will be available.

According to the theatre's executive director Andy Smith, the seats have no set price. "Instead, we are asking for donations that day – cash or check payable to The Newtown Theatre only."

The seats will be sold "as is" and most, said Smith, are in terrible condition.

"We cannot emphasize that enough," said Smith. "Most have been patched together over the years, have missing screws, rusty parts, torn or stained cushions, etc. They’re not in good shape."

Some of the seats may be "whole," while others will be dismantled.

"What you see is what you get," said Smith. "You’re more than welcome to take a dismantled seat and try to reassemble it at home. But we can’t guarantee that’s possible."

July 2 will be the only day seats will be available. "You must take the seats that day between noon to 4 p.m. Any seats not taken by 4 p.m. will be discarded," said Smith.

The theatre will be unable to hold or store the seats for future pickup. "If you can’t grab a seat on July 2, we suggest sending a friend or family member," he said.

"We cannot help dismantle the seats, move the seats, or help load them into your vehicle," Smith adds. "Some of the seats may be connected to each other. If you only want one seat, we suggest bringing multiple sizes of screwdrivers, wrenches, and other tools so you can try to disconnect them."

Moving the seats is not easy, added Smith. "They are very heavy and it’s not a job for one person, especially if they are connected to each other. We suggest bringing a friend to help. There is no limit to the number of seats you may take. We’re happy to see them find good homes in the community."
