TREDYFFRIN, PA —The Commonwealth Finance Authority has awarded Tredyffrin Township $2.2 million to address stormwater drainage issues along Trout Creek, State Sen. Carolyn Comitta announced Thursday.

“As we continue to face the growing impacts of climate change, including significant precipitation and flooding, it is vitally important that we invest in the future of our water, wastewater, and stormwater management systems,” said Comitta, who serves as minority chair of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. “These investments support environmental health, economic health, and public health for all members of our communities.”

Following Tropical Storms Fred and Ida in 2021, the township fielded numerous complaints from residents about water flowing from the creeks into their properties.

The supervisors explored the option of implementing a stormwater fee for residents but decided to wait for a ruling in a West Chester case on the issue before implementing the fee.

Instead, the supervisors increased the annual budget for stormwater management in 2024. For the average homeowner, a total of $158 will be allocated for stormwater management.

Trout Creek crosses Gulph Road, which extends into Valley Forge National Park, and is a state road heavily traveled by locals and commuters.

During the tropical storm season, which extends through September, Trout Creek often overflows onto adjacent roadways.

During the summer of 2021, the creek overflowed into Gateway Shopping Center, causing several stores, including Trader Joe’s, to close.
