Honoring Veterans Where Our Country Began: Valley Forge

A wreath-laying ceremony at the National Memorial Arch honors veterans who have died or who are now fighting for freedom and democracy.

VALLEY FORGE, PA —During a light rain Friday morning, about two dozen community members gathered at the National Memorial Arch to honor our living veterans and remember our veterans who died for our freedom and democracy.

At 11 a.m. park volunteers, U.S Air Force veteran Rich Crosley of Lower Pottsgrove Township and Dan Shallow, a Vietnam veteran of Lansdale, laid a wreath at the foot of the arch.

Crosley said it’s an honor to lay the wreath.

The wreath laying ceremony is to honor the sacrifices of American service members.

Park Ranger Bob Donnelly said the arch at Valley Forge Park is dedicated to all of those who served in George Washington’s Continental Army.

The Continental Army was made up of military units from the states joining together for one cause - freedom.

“This is the perfect place to honor our veterans,” he said.

At the close of the ceremony, Sean O’Neill of Bugles Across America, played taps.
