'Avenue Q' Coming To Berwyn's Footlighters Theater

Inspired by Sesame Street, "Avenue Q" creates a puppet filled world that reflects on the troubles of adulthood with hilarious, upbeat songs.

BERWYN, PA — Footlighters Theater in Berwyn is opening its 91st season by presenting the ever- popular, puppet-filled musical, "Avenue Q." The production opens this weekend

"Avenue Q" is a musical comedy featuring human actors and puppets, which were designed and built by Rick Lyon, an original "Avenue Q" cast member.

The show’s format is a parody of PBS’s "Sesame Street," however it is not recommended for children due to adult themes.

"Avenue Q" opens at Footlighters on Friday Oct. 18 and runs for three weekends. Friday and Saturday evening productions begin at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m.

Tickets for "Avenue Q" are available now online here for all shows. Tickets cost just $18 for adults.

Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more. Tickets may be purchased in advance (recommended to avoid disappointment) at www.footlighterstheater.com or at the door on the day of the show.

Doors typically open 30 minutes prior to show time.

Four puppeteers and three human actors comprise the principal cast and the puppets — Princeton, Kate, Nicky and others — are played by unconcealed puppeteers alongside costumed human actors.

With music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and book by Jeff Whitty, the show won Best Musical, Book, and Score at the 2004 Tony Awards. "Avenue Q" has received positive reviews for its approach to topics such as racism, homosexuality, and Internet pornography.

"Avenue Q" has had more than 2,500 performances, ranking 24th on the list of the longest running shows in Broadway history, before moving “off-Broadway” to New World Stages.

Its final off-Broadway performance was on the evening of May 26, 2019, and its two creators were in the audience along with many former cast members.

Footlighters Theater is located at 58 Main Ave. in Berwyn, just two blocks from the Berwyn Train station on the Paoli/Thorndale line. On-street parking is available and patrons also have access to the church parking lot across the street.
