BERWYN, PA — A pitbull was euthanized after repeated attacks on dogs and walkers in Teegarden Park, 440 Old State Road, Berwyn, a township supervisor reported this week.

Supervisor Sharon Humble said the dog was euthanized at the Brandywine Valley SPCA on June 23 after three separate incidents in the Teegarden, the only park in the township that allows off-leash dog walkers.

“People who know that the dog was biting now know the dog is no longer a threat,” she said.

Humble said that the Brandywine SPCA adopted the dog to the owners.

She questioned if anything could have been done after the second attack to prevent future attacks.

Superintendent of Police T. Michael Beaty said the proper procedures and timeline were followed.

He said the Brandywine SPCA is contracted by the county for dog incidents, noting the township has had positive experiences with Brandywine.

Township Manager Wiliam F. Martin said after the second incident, the dog was being tested for rabies.

Humble provided details of three incidents:

  • May 16: A resident reported that she and her dog were attacked by a pit bull, and the dog needed surgery. The owner left the park without providing a name.
  • May 21: The pitbull attacked a woman’s arm. The incident was filmed and police were notified.
  • June 16: The pitbull attacked a woman and her husband who were walking their dogs in the neighborhood. A Good Samaritan stopped to help and was also bit. The Brandywine Valley SPCA was notified. The owner was trying to get the dog adopted.
  • June 23: Brandywine Valley SPCA had the dog euthanized.
