Valley Forge Park Memorial Cobblestone Replacement Completed

The cobblestones provide authenticity while also slowing down motorists who use Gulph Road as a short cut.

VALLEY FORGE, PA —The replacement of cobblestones along Gulph Road in front of the Valley Forge Memorial Arch is complete, allowing walkers, joggers and bikers to traverse through the arch or relax on marble benches again.

The cobblestones provide authenticity while also slowing down motorists who use Gulph Road as a cut through from Phoenxiville to King of Prussia and Philadelphia.

The arch is a tribute to General George Washington and the troops he led during the Revolutionary War.

The $698,495 cobblestone replacement project was completed two weeks ahead of schedule.

“We are really pleased with how it worked out,” Richard M. Marino, vice president of Marino Corp., Skippack Township, contractor for the project, said Monday.

The project also included replacing the road and curbs and providing a walkway to a Free Mason Memorial along the northside of Gulph Road.

A narrow lane next to the cobblestones that visitors had used for parking is eliminated. A full parking lot is available on the other side of the monument.

PennDOT and the National Park Service officials have conducted inspections and are pleased with the outcome, Marino said.

The park in Montgomery and Chester counties attracts millions of visitors from around the world and is part of the Philadelphia tourist attraction bus route.

Aqua Pipe Project

Gulph Road, from Thomas to Outerline Drive, will remain closed to motorists from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. while Aqua replaces underground water pipes.

Motorists will continue to use the Route 23 detour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m until all the work is done.
