IVYLAND BOROUGH, PA —Borough officials are asking residents to be on alert after a rash of recent vehicle break-ins earlier this week.

"Dear neighbors, the Borough was the unfortunate recipient of some pilfering from and invasion into cars (Monday) night. If you suspect that you and your property fell victim to these vandals, I strongly urge you to file a police report, as it is one of the most effective tools to fully prosecute the individuals responsible, once they are apprehended," Borough Council President Sal DiPaolo said.

Warminster Township officials are reminding residents to lock their vehicles.

Here are some tips to prevent vehicle break-ins:

  • Lock the doors —Locking your car is one of the most effective ways to prevent theft. According to Neighborhood Watch, 44 percent of car break-ins occur through unlocked doors.
  • Park responsibly —Avoid parking in dark, secluded areas. If possible, park in well-lit, busier streets, or in illuminated, staffed parking lots.
  • Use an alarm system —Car alarms can deter break-ins by activating a siren when they detect unusual vibrations. Many newer cars come with built-in alarm systems, but you can also install an aftermarket system. If a break-in does occur, the alarm may scare the thief away.
  • Keep valuables out of sight —Don't leave valuables like laptops in your car where they're visible to potential thieves.
  • Keep your keys safe —Keep your keys out of sight and away from your front door when you're at home. Thieves can clone keys if they have access to them.
  • Don't leave your car unattended —Don't leave your car running with the keys in the ignition, even if it's just for a few seconds.
