Memorial Mass for St Germain, Former Congressman, is Aug. 28

Services for former congressman Joseph St Germain, who died on Saturday, will be Aug. 28.

The Honorable Fernand Joseph St Germain, 86, of St. Petersburg, FL, who represented the First District of Rhode Island in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1961 until 1989, died Saturday, August 16 at his summer home in Newport, Rhode Island after a long illness. He was born in Blackstone, MA, January 9, 1928 to Pearl (Talaby) and Andrew St Germain, and was raised in Woonsocket. He attended Our Lady of Providence Seminary and was a graduate of Providence College and Boston University Law School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1952. Before entering the House of Representatives he was elected to the R.I. Legislature in 1952 at the age of 24, and worked as an attorney for the Amica Insurance Company.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Rachel Mary O’Neill, and his parents. Survivors include one sister, Claire Velardi, of Newport, RI, and two daughters: Lisette Saint Germain of Newport and Laurene Sorensen of Moscow, Idaho.

At his death he was a member of the Vinoy Club, the St Petersburg Yacht Club, and the Newport Country Club, and a donor to many charitable organizations in St Petersburg, Newport, and elsewhere. The family encourages you to make a memorial donation to a charity of your choice in lieu of sending flowers.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 am on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at St. Mary’s Church, corner of Spring Street and Memorial Boulevard, Newport, RI.
