Obituary: Lawrence E. Mangei, 83

Lawrence E. Mangei, 83 of Johnston, RI, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died on Monday April 11, 2016 at Riverview Nursing Home in Coventry, RI.

Lawrence E. Mangei, 83 of Johnston, RI, formerly of Portsmouth, RI, died on Monday April 11, 2016 at Riverview Nursing Home in Coventry, RI.

He was the husband of Helen A. (Andronik) Mangei.

Born in North Syracuse, NY on March 24, 1933, he was the son of the late Emil E. and Virginia (Berndt) Mangei.

Mr. Mangei served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He attended Culinary Arts Institute of American and the Buffalo State Food Service Management program. He was the food director for 21 years at Raytheon. Mr. Mangei also worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance in Warwick and for Rowe Vending. He was Co-owner of Oak Manor Restaurant in Tiverton. He was also a chef at the Officers Club in Newport, worked for Moses Brown in the food service department, was Vice President of Helens Cafe in Providence and was reg. director for New England region with service systems. Mr. Mangei was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, a member of the Portsmouth Lions Club and Alumni Board of Culinary Institute of America, a member of CA Wine Institute and the NE Restaurant Association. He was involved with the Boy Scouts since 1946 and was awarded Buckelen Award and the Silver Beaver award. He was Scout master troop 70 Newport and Troop 5 Portsmouth.

Besides his wife of 36 years, he is survived by his step sons Leonard Macaruso of Providence, RI, Michael Macaruso of Hope, RI and Timothy Macaruso of Lincoln, RI, his step daughter Mary Jane Cummings of Johnston, RI, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was the step father of the late Joan Macaruso.

His funeral will be held on Monday April 18, 2016 at 10am in St. Mary’s Church, 538 Broadway in Providence, RI

Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
