Debris Rains From Nashville Sky After Plane's 'Engine Issue'

A Delta flight from Nashville to Atlanta had an "engine issue" after takeoff, forcing it to turn around and sending debris raining down.

NASHVILLE, TN -- An Atlanta-bound Delta flight returned to Nashville International Airport with what the airline called "an engine issue" shortly after takeoff Wednesday, sending debris raining from the Donelson sky.

The Delta flight 2599 took off at 4 p.m. Wednesday but had to turn around with the engine issue. It landed safely and the 149 passengers were moved to another plane.

Meanwhile, businesses and homes in the area were showered with falling metal, which damaged vehicles and busted windows. Airport police helped clear some debris, but that effort was taken over by Metro Police as most of the shrapnel fell outside the airport's jurisdiction.

"Safety is always our top priority and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience," Delta said in a statement. The airline is investigating what caused the engine failure.
