ASHBURN, VA — Incumbent Democrat Jennifer Wexton has claimed victory in Virginia's 10th Congressional District. The Associated Press called the race on Tuesday night.

With nearly 200 of the district's 209 precincts reporting, Wexton holds a 17,000 vote lead over Republican Challenger Hung Cao, according to unofficial results.

"Thank you for this tremendous honor and the opportunity of a lifetime to continue to represent you in Congress," Wexton told supporters during her victory speech. "My love for public service has only grown."

Wexton took office in 2019 after she defeated then-incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock. She previously served in the Virginia Senate and now sits on the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

In a speech on Tuesday, Wexton outlined her continued goals in public service. "My kids and your kids are the reason I ran for Congress in 2018," Wexton said. "I want to build a future where they can afford healthcare, where they're safe from gun violence, have a sustainable planet, and get a world-class public education."

Cao is a retired Navy Captain who served in a special operations unit for 25 years. Cao originally came to Virginia as Vietnamese refugee in 1975 and was a graduate of the inaugural class of Thomas Jefferson High School in 1982.

Patch spoke to several voters on Election Day who discussed what issues were most important to them on their ballot.

One voter in Woodbridge said she was focused on reproductive rights for herself and her two daughters.

Other voters mentioned concerns about inflation, the economy, gun control, and social justice.

"At the end of the day, we all have things we believe and have to vote accordingly," voter Matthew James told Patch.

Unofficial election results are starting to come in on Virginia Department of Elections website.
