Fee-Free Adoptions Offered For Loudoun's Clear The Shelters Event

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Families looking for a new pet can take a look first at the Loudoun County Animal Services animal shelter, which is offering fee-free adoptions over a week in August.

The "Clear the Shelters" adoption event will be held from Saturday, Aug. 17 to Sunday, Aug. 25. Loudoun County's event is part of NBCUniversal Local’s pet adoption project, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary and helped find homes for over 1 million pets.

This year, Loudoun County Animal Services expanded the "Clear the Shelters" event to a full week. Adoption fees will be waived for all available pets, including cats, kittens, dogs, rabbits, small pets like hamsters and guinea pigs, and livestock.

"We are hopeful this weeklong event will draw our community in to see the amazing pets we have for adoption," said Melissa Heard, the shelter operations manager. "Our facility was not designed to hold this many dogs, so we are counting on adopters to come out [and] help us continue our life-saving mission through adopting a pet."

Loudoun County Animal Services has experienced a 20 percent increase in animals coming into the shelter to date in 2024 compared to last year. A recent surge in dogs has led the animal shelter to set up temporary kennels.

Dogs, cats and rabbits adopted from Loudoun County Animal Services are spayed or neutered and receive age-appropriate vaccinations. The animals also receive a microchip registered to the adopter and a coupon for a free GPS tracker.
