Remember Area Students on Giving Tuesday

Donate to Food For Neighbors and help children near you!

This Giving Tuesday, please make a tax-deductible gift to Food For Neighbors and help the many area middle and high school students who are struggling with food insecurity. Schools are reaching out to Food For Neighbors to address hunger among students who lack a reliable source of nutrition. Your donation will help Food For Neighbors to provide supplemental food for students in over 40 currently-participating schools in Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun counties and to say “yes” to four more schools requesting support for their students.

Many of these students rely greatly on free/reduced price meals provided Mondays through Fridays by the schools. This leaves children vulnerable to hunger over the weekends, holidays, and other school breaks. Food For Neighbors addresses this food gap via its Red Bag Program, a community-based initiative that enables neighbors to make a difference in the lives of students attending nearby schools. In 2023 alone, Food For Neighbors anticipates providing well over 100,000 pounds of food and toiletries to participating schools, and, for the more vulnerable students, approximately $140,000 in grocery gift cards for most-needed items, like fresh fruits and vegetables. This is thanks to the generosity of over 2,700 registered food and toiletry donors, over 2,700 interested volunteers, and many financial contributors.

Thank you for your support. Your involvement as a Red Bag donor, volunteer, or financial contributor truly makes a difference. Last school year, Food For Neighbors helped approximately 5,800 students (unduplicated) in need, and many received support on a weekly basis. Surveys of 2022 participating schools reflect that staff believe the supplemental food helps the large majority of students attend school more regularly, focus better on their studies, and earn better grades. Students are growing and learning, which lifts up everyone!
