FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A "cat lady" is a "woman who has a lot of cats, especially a woman who lives alone and is considered to be slightly strange," according to the Cambridge Dictionary.

Although some people may take offense at that characterization, the dictionary also classifies the term as "humorous," which is likely why most of the cat ladies out there seem to embrace the title. If it's "slightly strange" to have a big heart and affection for cats of all shapes, sizes, ages, temperaments and fur colors, so be it.

Friday was National Cat Lady Day. To celebrate the occasion, Patch invited all the cat ladies in Fairfax City to share photos of the felines they adore for this photo gallery.

The brown tabby is “Tigre,” the white cat is “Yeti,” and the calico is “Nala.” Believe it or not, Yeti and Tigre are brother and sister. Nala was a later addition. All three are rescue cats. Tigre is skittish but also very loving, Yeti is a lovable oaf, and Nala is a little princess. We are grateful that they allow us to share their home with them. — Laurie Seaton, Fairfax City

About my cat: Hazel is a two year old tuxedo cat! She loves to play but could spend all day curled up in my lap. Hazel is extremely smart, she will sit and give paw for her favorite treats(freeze-dried chicken). I can’t imagine life without her! — Molly Driscoll, Vienna

(Tammy Scott)

This is my cat Bubby. He is 5-years-old but looks like a kitten and he is the sweetest little boy. He is scared of just about everything so he loves to stay in my lap. He was adopted from a rescue and I'm so thankful I found him! — Tammy Scott, Fairfax City

(Molly Myers)

This is a picture of Molly. I adopted Molly on December 30, 2023 from the Fairfax Animal shelter. Molly is almost 11-years-old. Her prior owner died. It is purely coincidental that we have the same name. She enjoys my big bay window and playing with her many toys. Molly has been such a blessing to me and my many friends who come to visit us. We all love her very much! — Molly Myers, Fairfax City

(Patricia Stephens)

This is my girl Marley, who I adopted from the Fairfax County shelter when she was about a year old. She will be 12 this summer. Sweetest cat ever! — Patricia Stephens, Fairfax City

(Beth Nolley)

My name is Beth Nolley and I'm a crazy cat lady! I live in Fairfax County just on the border of Fairfax City near GMU. I have three rescue cats, and the one in the attached picture is Leia. She was an orphaned neonatal kitten who was rescued by a good samaritan and fostered by an orange tabby mama cat with a litter of similarly-aged kittens. She is the sweetest, most loving cat I've ever known, and gets along with everybody... even the dogs! She's my first black cat and my husband and I named her after Princess Leia. Her birthday is May 4, which is Star Wars Day, and she has a white patch on her chest that forms the letter V for Vader!

(C.J. Hamilton)
This is Squeaky! Rescued him from the streets in Houston, Texas. He just squeaked when we found him and he was so happy. He is the best. My Dad thought we should name him a more manly name, as in Texacat, but Squeaky it is. — C.J. Hamilton
