Most government offices will be closed, and some services will operate differently on Thursday for the Independence Day holiday.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As many families head to vacation destinations, host barbecues and watch fireworks on Fourth of July, many government offices and services will be closed or altered.

Fourth of July falls on Thursday, July 4 this year. Here are the openings and closings to know around Alexandria.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools and offices are closed on July 4.

Alexandria courts: General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court Office (Courthouse and Del Pepper Center locations) will be closed on July 4 and 5.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Closed on July 4. For animal emergency or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.

DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday service schedule on July 4. The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square (301 King St.) with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., daily.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers in Northern Virginia will be closed on July 4.

Health department: Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School’s King Street Campus and Minnie Howard Campus will be closed on July 4.

Historic Alexandria facilities: The Alexandria Archaeology Museum will be closed on July 4. All other museums will be open according to their standard schedules.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed City holidays, including July 4. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Library: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on July 4.

Metrorail: Metrorail will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight. Regular weekday fares will be in effect until 5 p.m. All trips after 5 p.m. will be fare-free, and parking will be free all day at Metro-owned garages and lots. More weekend Metrorail information is available here.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts on July 4. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Pools: Warwick Pool, Old Town Pool, and Memorial Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on July 4.

Post offices: Closed on July 4.

Recreation centers: City of Alexandria recreation and nature centers will be closed on July 4. Torpedo Factory Art Center is closed on July 4.

Trash and recycling collection: Residential trash, recycling, and curbside waste collection normally scheduled for Thursday will be delayed until Friday. Residents with private collection services should check with their hauler for any changes.

Virginia Railway Express: VRE will not operate on July 4 and will run on an S schedule on July 5.
