ALEXANDRIA, VA — The unofficial start of summer kicks off with Memorial Day weekend. In Alexandria, government facilities and offices will close.

The long holiday weekend is a time families reflect on American military servicemembers who died in the line of duty. It is also a time to enjoy summer festivities like beach trips, barbecues and more.

For anyone who is looking for other information about Memorial Day openings and closings, here's a list of relevant information for Alexandria:

  • City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on May 27.
  • State courts: General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court and the Clerk of Circuit Court are closed May 27.
  • Alexandria City Public Schools: Schools and offices are closed on May 27.
  • Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Closed on May 27. For animal emergency or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.
  • Department of Motor Vehicles: The Virginia DMV offices are closed on May 27.
  • DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule, and Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices will be closed on May 27. The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., every day.
  • Health department: Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center will be closed on May 27.
  • Historic Alexandria facilities: All museums will be open based on their normal operating schedules.

  • Impound lot: The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed City holidays, including May 27. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.
  • Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on May 27.
  • Metro: Metrorail will 7 a.m. and close at midnight on May 27. Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. On the Blue and Silver Lines, free shuttle buses replace trains between Addison Road and Downtown Largo. Morgan Boulevard and Downtown Largo stations are closed.   • Office of Elections: Closed on May 27.
  • Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts on May 27. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.
  • Pools: Warwick Pool, Old Town Pool, and Memorial Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on May 27.
  • Post offices: Closed on May 27.
  • Recreation, nature and art centers: Charles Houston Recreation Center and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other City of Alexandria recreation and nature centers will be closed. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. according to its normal schedule.
  • Trash and recycling: Residential refuse, recycling, yard waste, and curbside food waste collection will be delayed by one day during the week of May 27. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on May 27.
