ALEXANDRIA, VA — Residents and businesses in Alexandria honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15.

As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation and other services in Alexandria.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federally observed day of service. The City of Alexandria will host its Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Program from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at George Washington Masonic National Memorial, 101 Callahan Dr., Alexandria, VA. Below are the openings and closures to know for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday around Alexandria:

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adoptions begin at noon. For an animal emergency or wildlife concern, call 703-746-4444.

Courts: Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15.

DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule on Monday, Jan. 15. The Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices will be closed. The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

Department of Motor Vehicles: Closed on Jan. 15.

Health department: Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center will be closed on Jan. 15.

Historic Alexandria museums: The Freedom House Museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All other city museums will be closed.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays, including Monday, Jan. 15. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed Monday, Jan. 15.

Metrorail: Over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, Metro will close a portion of the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines on Friday, Jan. 12 through Monday, Jan. 15. During the four-day closure, buses will replace trains with no rail service between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line; and between Foggy Bottom-GWU and Clarendon on the Orange and Silver lines. The Rosslyn and Court House stations will be closed. Customers traveling through the work zone should expect significant delays and allow at least 30 minutes of additional travel time to account for shuttle buses. Other Metro lines, including the Red Line, will operate on a Saturday holiday schedule from 5 a.m. to midnight on Monday, Jan. 15. View Metro timetables here.

Parking: On Monday, Jan. 15, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Post offices: Closed on Monday, Jan. 15.

Recreation, nature and art centers: On Monday, Jan. 15, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center, and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other City of Alexandria recreation and nature centers will be closed. Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Trash and recycling: Residential refuse, recycling, and yard waste will be delayed by one day during the week of Jan. 15. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15. Curbside food waste will follow the normal collection service schedule. Residents with private collection should contact their haulers.
