What's Open, Closed For Presidents Day 2024 In Alexandria

There will be various closures for the Presidents Day holiday as well as events to celebrate George Washington events around Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Presidents Day, also known as George Washington's Birthday, will provide a three-day weekend for many employees and students, and this year the holiday falls on Monday, Feb. 19.

While many services will be closed for the holiday, residents can get out and enjoy several observances to celebrate the first president. The highlight in Alexandria is the George Washington Birthday Parade. George Washington's Mount Vernon will free admission on Presidents Day, Monday, Feb. 19, and Thursday, Feb. 22. Tickets will be limited and distributed on site.

The federal holiday will prompt closures of government offices, schools and other services on Feb. 19, while other services like transit may have schedule changes. Here are the openings and closings to know in Alexandria.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Monday, Feb. 19.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Feb. 19 is a holiday.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 19. Adoptions begin at noon. For animal emergency or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.

Courts: The Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court will be closed on Feb. 19.

DASH Bus: DASH bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule. Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices will be closed. The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Emergency hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center will be closed on Feb. 19.

Historic Alexandria facilities: The Freedom House Museum, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, and Friendship Firehouse Museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. All other museums will be closed on Feb. 19.

Impound lot: The City’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays, including Feb. 19. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Library: All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on Feb. 19.

Metro: Metro will be open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, 7 a.m. to midnight on Sunday, and 5 a.m. to midnight on Monday. On the Red Line, there will be single tracking between Van Ness and Friendship Heights from Saturday to Monday. Trains operate every 18 minutes between Glenmont and Shady Grove. On the Blue Line, trains run every 18 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Foggy Bottom Saturday and Sunday. On the Orange and Silver Lines, trains single track between Smithsonian and Federal Center SW and run every 18 minutes Saturday and Sunday. Normal service is planned on the Yellow and Green Lines.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts on Feb. 19. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Post offices: Closed on Feb. 19.

Recreation, nature and art centers: Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation, and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 19. All other City of Alexandria recreation and nature centers will be closed. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Trash and recycling: City of Alexandria residential refuse, recycling, and yard waste will be delayed by one day during the week of Monday, Feb. 19. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be closed. Curbside food waste will follow the normal collection service schedule.
