Flooding, Outages Affect Fairfax County; More Rain Coming

A thunderstorm impacted the region overnight, and more rain is expected Wednesday due to Ida remnants.

VIENNA, VA — As a thunderstorm rocked the region overnight, downed trees, outages and flooded roads have impacted Fairfax County. Forecasters expect more rain throughout Wednesday as Tropical Depression Ida makes its way up the East Coast.

There was at least one water rescue incident. Fairfax County government posted a photo of a car stuck in floodwaters in the area of Browns Mill Road and Pennycress Lane in Vienna.

Additional road closures have been reported due to flooding or downed trees. As of 10:13 a.m., Fairfax County Police reported the following road closures:

  • Poplar Tree Rd and Walney Rd, Chantilly: closed due to downed tree
  • Old Mill Rd and Centreville Rd, Centreville: closed due to flooding
  • Old Courthouse Rd and Besley Rd, Tysons: closed due to flooding
  • Woodburn Rd and Spicewood Dr, Annandale: closed due to flooding
  • Browns Mill Rd and Pennycress Ln, Vienna: closed due to down tree
  • Beach Mill Rd and Clubview Dr, Great Falls: closed due to downed tree
  • Hunter Mill Rd and Cedar Pond Dr, Oakton: closed due to flooding (reopened)
  • 500 bock of River Bend Rd, Great Falls: closed due to flooding (reopened)

  • Leigh Mill Rd and Kelso Rd, Great Falls: closed due to flooding
  • Walker Rd and Murphy Dr, Great Falls: closed due to downed tree (reopened)

The Virginia Department of Transportation reported the closure of the Swinks Mill Road bridge over Scotts Run. Crews will be removing debris and repairing the approach to the bridge, but a long-term closure isn't expected.

County government and the fire department urged residents to avoid driving through flooded road as Ida's remnants bring more rain. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue expects calls related to drivers stuck in flooded roads and asks drivers to plan alternate routes around flooded roads. Certain roads around the county are known to flood, such as Old Courthouse Road and Besley Road in Tysons and Woodburn Road and Spicewood Drive in Annandale.

The thunderstorm brought power outages to some areas overnight. Scattered outages still remain in areas of Northern Virginia, according to Dominion Energy's outage map.

A flood warning is in effect for central Fairfax County through noon and northwestern Fairfax County through 11:30 a.m. Areas in the warning area have already seen flooding. Earlier heavy rain has caused stream levels to continue rising.

According to the National Weather Service: these areas include: Fairfax, Vienna, Mantua, Pimmit Hills, Burke, Oakton, Tysons Corner, Wolf Trap, Great Falls, Merrifield, I-66/I-495 interchange, West Springfield, Fairfax Station, Dunn Loring, Clifton, Belleview, Centreville, Reston, Herndon, Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, and Bull Run.

A flash flood watch is in effect for the greater region through Wednesday night. Heavy rain creates the potential for flash flooding of creeks, small streams and even main stem rivers. According to the NWS, heavy rain will continue through the evening. Rainfall will be between 1 to 3 inches with localized amounts of 5 inches possible.
