VIENNA, VA — The first full week of January brought two winter storms to the region, the first of which caused power outages, hazardous road conditions and closures. Monday's storm was more significant than the few inches that fell overnight into Friday, but both combined exceed last winter season's total snowfall.

Monday's storm alone brought 8.3 inches to Dunn Loring, according to National Weather Service preliminary snowfall totals. In the Vienna WNW area, a NWS trained spotter recorded 7 inches. Friday's storm was less significant but still brought between 2.2 inches and 3.2 inches in different areas of Vienna and 3.5 inches in Wolf Trap SSW.

Monday's snowfall (with or without Friday's snowfall) outpaces the 5.4 inches of total accumulation during the 2020-2021 winter season in Washington, DC. The last time DC had this much monthly snow was 11.5 inches in January 2019. That can be credited to a Jan. 14 2019 snowstorm that brought between a varying 6 to 12 inches in the DC region, according to the Washington Post.
