WOODBRIDGE, VA — Pickleball players will soon have more courts available in Woodbridge.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors on Tuesday approved funding to convert a tennis court at Veterans Memorial Park into two dedicated pickleball courts.

"I'm pleased today to see this resolution," said Woodbridge District Supervisor Margaret Angela Franklin. "It's been working with the pickleball community for a few years now. And they have been very — I'll use the word — dedicated to getting additional pickleball courts and making sure that I am well aware of how active this community is."

Pickleball has been growing in popularity in recent years, prompting players to seek more locations.

According to the Prince William Parks and Recreation's website, there are 32 pickleball courts throughout the county. In Woodbridge, the county's A.J. Ferlazzo Building has eight dedicated pickleball courts, and Veterans Memorial Park has four dedicated courts. The county board's new approval will increase pickleball courts to six at Veterans Memorial Park.

According to a county staff report, Veterans Park has two dedicated tennis courts, one of which is dually striped to allow pickleball play. County staff found there is high demand for pickleball courts in Prince William County, while demand for tennis courts has declined. Community tennis players can use county-managed tennis courts and middle school tennis courts.

In summer 2023, the County Board of Supervisors directed county staff to develop a proposal to expand pickleball courts at Veterans Court and expand tennis courts along the Route 1 corridor. Later that year, the county board asked staff to propose funding for the conversion at Veterans Memorial Park. Funding for the court conversion comes from parks and recreation contributions from the Featherstone Square and Potomac Town Center developers.

Even more pickleball capacity in all seasons could be provided by a proposed indoor sports complex, WTOP reported.
