      Demonstrative pronouns

      Explanation

Words like this and that not only function as adjectives in English, as in this book or that house, but can also be used as pronouns, as in I like this (one) and you like that (one).
The difference between demonstrative adjectives, which are used right before nouns, and demonstrative pronouns, which stand on their own in place of nouns.
      este/esta this (one)
      estos/estas these (ones)
      ese/esa that (one)
      esos/esas those (ones)
      aquel/aquella that (one) over there
      aquellos/aquellas those (ones) over there

      Neuter demonstrative pronouns:
There are three neuter demonstrative pronouns used to refer to abstract concepts or unspecified objects, or if the gender is unknown.

      esto this (one, thing)
      eso that (one, thing)
aquello that (one, thing) further away

      Example

Este número de fax es el mío y este es el tuyo.
This fax number is mine and this one is yours.

Esa pantalla es plana y esa no.
That screen is flat and that one is not.

Aquella computadora es nueva y aquella no.
That computer is new and that one is not.

      Common mistakes

The neuter forms (esto, eso, aquello) are used to talk about an object you don’t recognize or about an idea or statement.

      ¿Esto qué es?

      ¿Este qué es?
