In this edition of the 3064 blog, we're turning our focus to The Miners' Trail - Snowdon. A trail which begins at Pen-y-pass carpark and ends at Snowdons summit.

Embarking on the Miners' Trail, Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is an adventure worth every step. From breath-taking views to challenging terrain, this route offers an unforgettable experience for hiking enthusiasts. In this guide, we'll delve into the top tips to make your journey seamless.

The Journey To Trail Start Point

We travelled from South Wales through mid Wales to Pen-Y-Pass carpark, we arrived in just over 4 hours.

Parking & Amenities

We pre-booked online using the JustPark app, the process was easy. Upon arrival we gave the warden our reference number for entry. Book a spot for at least 6 hours. **You will need to prebook in order to get a space. **

Miners' Trail - Start Point

On an overcast Tuesday in early June, we set off aiming to reach the peak in around 3 hours. We used the trail beginning at the far left side of the Pen-y-pass carpark, however the trail to the far right will also take you to the summit.

Why Miners Trail?

We took this Trail of all the options because although this Trail is labelled as trickier than others, it weaves around stunning lakes for the first half of the journey and according to sources there are less people on the route which is a bonus when trying to capture content.

Preparation

Prioritize planning, acquainting yourself with the route, weather forecasts, and potential hazards. Equip yourself with navigational tools such as maps, compasses, and GPS devices to ensure a smooth journey. Checking the forecast is especially important. The weather was overcast for our trip and we hoped it wouldn't interrupt the view but unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worst after 2 hours, a storm came in and we were all soaked through. Aside from this, the further we climbed the more our view was restricted due to the fog. 

Early Start

Beat the crowds by starting your hike early. Not only will you enjoy quieter trails, but you'll also have ample time to savour the scenery without rushing.

Efficient Packing

Leverage the organizational capabilities of the Three Peaks Nomad 42L Backpack or similar to streamline your load. Prioritize essentials like hydration, high energy snacks, first aid kit and versatile clothing.

Dress in Layers

The weather on Snowdon can change rapidly, so layering is key. Opt for moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer shell to stay comfortable in varying conditions.

Hydration and Nutrition

Sustain energy levels with a well-stocked supply of water and nutrient-dense snacks. Prioritize portable, high-calorie options such as nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars.

Footwear Selection

The Miners' Trail features rugged terrain with uneven surfaces and rocky sections. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support to prevent slips and trips along the way.

Environmental Respect

As you trek through Snowdonia National Park, remember to respect the environment and wildlife. Stay on marked trails, dispose of waste responsibly, and avoid disturbing animals.

Strategic Rest Breaks

Listen to your body and take breaks as needed to rest and recharge. Pace yourself to maintain a steady rhythm, especially during steep ascents and descents.
