Request a Copy of a Police Report

Disclaimer

Processing of requests may take up to 10 calendar days. 

Only people involved in an incident or their legal representative can receive copies of police reports. Release of reports is governed by the California Public Records Act as well as by department policy. Report information will not be released unless the requester establishes both a "right to know" and "need to know". The UC Berkeley Police Department evaluates requests for police report copies on a case-by-case basis.

An approved report for release will require review of a valid government issued photo I.D. and collection of the non-refundable duplication and processing fee at the time of retrieval of the report. You will be notified of the approved report and fee amount via e-mail or phone call.

FAQs

Duplication and Processing Fee

One copy of a report will be provided with no charge to the victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, or elder and dependent adult abuse.

For all other reports:

  • $7.00  (1-5 Pages)
  • $10.00  (6-10 Pages)
  • $20.00  (11-20+ Pages)

Who can request copies of crime and incident reports?

Reports may be released to:

  • the victim(s).
  • an authorized representative of the victim.
  • an insurance carrier against which a claim has been made or might be made.
  • any person suffering bodily injury, property damage, or loss.

Reports may not be released if:

  • the disclosure would endanger the safety of a witness or other involved party.
  • endanger the successful completion of the investigation and/or related investigation.

Traffic Collision Reports

Reports may be released to:

  • Drivers involved in the collision
  • Registered owners of vehicles involved
  • Parents of a minor driver involved
  • Passengers involved listed in report
  • Insurance companies
  • Those incurring property damage or civil liability as a result of the accident
  • Attorneys representing any of the above

Reports are not released to witnesses.

Arrest Reports

Copies of arrest reports for pending Court actions can be obtained through the Dristict Attorney's Office. Arrest reports that have been adjudicated are released with the approval of the UCB Police Department.

No arrest reports will be released if:

  • the disclosure would endanger the safety of a person.
  • the disclosure would endanger the successful completion of the investigation or a related investigation.
  • the arrest is a medical or similar detention and disclosure would constitute an invasion of privacy.

Juvenile Reports

Reports with information relating to people who were 17 or younger when the incident occurred require additional documention. Parents of a juvenile may reveive a copy of certain types of reports if their child is the only juvenile identified in the report.

All other requesters must petition the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court directly for the release of juvenile records. The Juvenile Court has the excluse authority to determine whom, and the extent to which juvenile record information may be released. The completed forms can be mailed or delivered to the Alameda County Superior Court.
