BREAKING 🚨 Almost half of people claiming Universal Credit ran out of food in the last month and did not have enough money to buy more. Universal Credit is falling short and pushing people to food banks. People cannot wait for an economic turnaround to improve their current situations. We urge the Government act. People facing hunger need immediate relief, and strong services in their communities. The upcoming budget must strengthen social security to tackle hardship at the root.

🚨 The Household Support Fund has been extended! The Fund enables local authorities in England to provide vital support to people, including advice with money matters and help with the cost of essentials, like bills. And this extension will provide some much-needed relief to families on the lowest incomes this winter. Families have told us that this support has meant that they can pay their energy bills, cover the bus to work or replace essentials, like bedding. BUT this is just a first step in the right direction. We now need the government to commit to a long-term strategy of support, including taking urgent action in the Budget this October to update our social security system so that it's fit for purpose. 💚 #Foodbank #Charity

Staff at the Bank of England have come together to support us and the food banks in our network over the past year – and they’ve achieved some incredible things. ⭐ As well as packing OVER 950kgs worth of toiletries for Southwark Foodbank, they have helped fundraise through the auction of King Charles III banknotes and by hosting a summer quiz night and virtual raffle. We’re hugely grateful for the Bank of England’s fantastic fundraising efforts and all their support. 👏 💚

More than HALF of people turning to food banks are facing deductions from their Universal Credit payments. This is causing millions to go without the essentials. There's a 5-week wait built into Universal Credit before people can get their first payment. This leaves many people with no option but to take an advanced payment, but they have to pay this debt back when the support kicks in. The basic rate of Universal Credit is JUST £91 a week for a single adult. This amount doesn't even cover the cost of essentials, let alone if you have deductions taken off too. Our social security system should provide just that - security. But right now, it's not. It's time for it to be updated so that everyone can afford the essentials they need to survive. 💚 #Charity #UniversalCredit

That's 1 in 6 people who can't access the internet to keep in touch with loved ones, apply for Universal Credit, or search for jobs. But it doesn't have to be this way.
