The mission of the Custer State Park Fire Suppression Program is to safely provide wildland fire protection for the public and the natural, cultural, geological and man made resources in the park. This will be accomplished by maintaining well trained, well informed, physically capable and well prepared firefighters. Team members will promote a positive atmosphere through open communication and teamwork, and foster a positive interagency relationship with all public safety agencies.

The Custer District Office manages the fire suppression program for the 71,000 acre Custer State Park. The fire management program is an interagency fire management program comprised of firefighting resources from both South Dakota Wildland Fire and Custer State Park. The Custer District Office is also responsible for wildland fires within Custer County.

The Fire Management Officer oversees and coordinates the fire management program.

The Custer District Office staffs three Type 6 wildland engines and one Type 3 water tender with both Wildland Fire and Custer State Park firefighters.
