I must say, the superior German quality makes a difference. It is definitely one of the rare products that offers the best brewing, the ideal temperature and the most delicious filter coffee like Philips' machines. I do most of the coffee drinking in the house, apart from a shared pot in the morning my wife switches to tea the rest of the day so the hot water dispenser here has definitely been getting used. I was happy to see that the hot water system is a completely different water circuit from the drip brewer one and comes out of it's own spout and not through any area that ever held coffee grinds so you get clean, untainted water out of the machine even if you use it to dispense hot water immediately after brewing coffee. The water temperature is easily adjustable before dispensing which is pretty nice for a machine in this range. Just about the only complaint I have about the hot water dispensing (apart from the fact that you need to move a physical lever to do so, which seems archaic to me) is that it dispenses hot water slowly... it kind of just dribbles out and takes quite a while just to fill one 12oz cup up.

The overall design is pretty good in terms of being easy to operate, the detachable water tank is a bit less messy than filling the carafe with water and dumping directly in the machine as is the case for most coffee makers and it should also make for less nasty scale buildup in the water reservoir which is difficult to clean in other machines. That being said this thing is pretty big for a drip coffee maker and takes up way more horizontal counter space than our last machine (also a Braun) was taking. On top of that, it's extremely tall and not well suited to putting on counters that have upper cabinets. In order to use this machine I have to physically pull the whole machine out from under the cabinets to attach the water reservoir and put the coffee grinds in, this aspect I am not a big fan of. The "cup tray" which is permanently attached inside of the carafe area can be flipped down when you make a single cup, but the height of it doesn't seem to be adjustable which means my favourite "big" mugs I use for coffee every morning don't fit on the tray, but if I don't use the tray the top of the mug is far enough away from where the coffee is dispensing that it does have the potential to be messy if you're not paying attention. The carafe, which looks more like a chemistry beaker than anything is nice and solid and looks cool but the pouring spout takes some getting used to as it pours fast and wide and I've made a mess trying to fill a travel mug with a narrow opening more than once.

Making coffee with this machine gives you more to think about than I'm used to with a drip coffee maker. The usual process of just filling the machine with the quantity of water you need and then adding the right amount of grids for the water you added is not what happens here. The water reservoir can be filled all the way up and depending on where you set the dial the machine uses only as much water as the quantity of coffee you're choosing to make. You still need to take care to measure the right amount of grinds as there is no "grinds hopper" that measures out the amount of coffee automatically as it does for the amount of water you use. I feel like the water reservoir would be more useful if it held more than 1 full carafe of water so you could just fill it up and forget about it for a longer period of time. Provided you're paying attention to use the right amount of grinds for the different coffee settings (which are helpfully marked directly on the measuring spoon included) it gives good results in both single cup and full carafe modes which is pretty cool because I was expecting an inferior coffee when brewing only a single cup in this manner.

I've stuck to the "Gold" setting (Specialty coffee Association golden cup) and it has made noticeably superior coffee every time than our old machine. Honestly, I thought it was just going to be a gimmick but it really does seem to make better coffee - either that or the placebo effect is strong in me, but either way I like what I'm drinking. I definitely have no complaints about the coffee that comes out of this machine.

So where do I start? We wanted a coffee maker that made a good single cup of coffee and YES this one does. We wanted a coffee maker that made a pot of coffee quicker and YES this does! We wanted a coffee maker that had a good size water resevoir and YES this has the biggest of all the ones I looked at. Some reviews said it is too high. It looks great on the counter and we just pull it out when brewing. Some pots make steam and damage the cupboards over time. We have yet to see steam come out of this one. And finally I wanted a coffee maker with larger variety of cup sizes and YES this one is perfect. Small cup, regular mug, travel mug, huge mug, half a pot and a full pot. My only complain is the lid doesn't seem to have a catch so it comes off easily but never when we are pouring coffee. It also does not dribble coffee. The coffee tastes great too by the way. This is the best coffee maker we have ever owned. Way to go Braun!

i was replacing a very old bunn phase brew that i loved. this machine brews a little better than that. i am not a fan of the cone filters, but that is no big deal. the water tank comes off easily and is replaced just as easily when full. the basket has the stop to pour bobber on it, but it is not in contact with the pot. when i take the used coffee filter out, the bobber closes and i don't drip on the floor going to the trash. i use the stop to pour even when it is done so i don't drip on the plate. the lever slides easily. the hot water feature is great too. i make tea so this is a nice add on. easy to set programable. touch keys. and the biggest thing of all is that i can pour it without spilling. i even tried with cold water and couldn't. the flavor of the "gold" is great. i did try over ice and that worked too. size select and cup tray round it out.
i have to say i was worried i would have issues, but i really really like this thing.
as a side note, before i purchased it, i contacted braun via email with a question and they actually responded a couple days later.

Bought it with a lot of skepticism since the Moccamaster had to be relocated to Vegas with the girlfriend. Now machineless, I looked at Consumer Reports and SCA lists and tried 2 other coffee machines that were supposedly SCA certified and highly rated... but they could not replicate the amazingness of the Moccamaster.... neither in flavor, speed or consistency.

Now enters this Braun Coffee Maker..... I set it up...clean it per instructions and make my first cup.... and I am instantly blown away... it matched if not exceeded my trusted but now departed Moccamaster. I could not believe that a company that I initially thought made shaving supplies for men could make such a glorious device. I got corrected very quickly here.

What got me here was the SCA certification but after having 100+ cups of coffee already and counting, I can confirm that brewing speed, settings accuracy and all the bells and whistles work quite well. This was the one machine I had the least amount of expectations and it was the one that blew me away. And the best part ? It is half the price of the Moccamaster with significantly more features. I cannot recommend this device enough.
