Dajaune Brown was Gateshead's hero as they beat Solihull Moors on penalties to win the FA Trophy - the West Midlands club's second defeat in a shootout at Wembley in the space of six days.

On-loan Derby County winger Brown, 18, equalised in extra time and, after the game ended level at 2-2, last season's beaten finalists won 5-4 on penalties.

It meant more heartache for Solihull, who missed out a place in the English Football League when Bromley beat them on penalties in last Saturday's National League promotion final.

Tyrese Shade and Joss Labadie, who both missed their spot-kicks in that game, missed again.

After Regan Booty put Gateshead in front just before half-time, Mark Beck equalised with a diving header from Joe Newton’s left-wing cross.

In extra time, Beck put the Moors ahead with a penalty after being fouled by Louis Storey.

But Gateshead, managed by former Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot, hit back with Brown’s equaliser and then prevailed in the shootout.

It was a sad end to the campaign for Solihull, but Elliot's side have endured disappointment this season as well.

Having finished sixth in the National League, they were denied a play-off spot because the EFL deemed that they had not satisfied the criteria for possible promotion after failing to secure a "10-year security of tenure" at the International Stadium, where they have played since 1971.

In the Wembley sunshine, Gateshead went ahead just before the break when Brown did superbly on the left and sent in a low cross towards Booty, who slid in to bundle the ball home.

Beck missed a great chance soon after the interval when he was unable to hit the target from close range.

But he made amends in emphatic fashion by hauling Moors level midway through the second half.

Both teams threatened during the rest of normal time and Gateshead had strong appeals for a penalty in the 88th minute waved away when on-loan Cardiff City midfielder Kieron Evans went down under a challenge from Alex Whitmore.

Gateshead felt aggrieved by that decision - and that was compounded by Beck’s second goal then coming from a penalty at the other end.

However, they drew level when Booty swung the ball in from the right and Tom Allan touched it back across goal to give Brown a simple tap-in.

But Shade blasted over, James Clarke’s kick was saved by keeper James Montgomery, and Storey - who had to score to keep Gateshead in it - found the net.

The shootout went to sudden death, with Labadie also blasting over, giving Allan the chance to win it - but his weak kick was straight at Hayes.

However, after former Gateshead player Whimore hit the bar, Brown made no mistake.
