That leaves wins for Coventry against Oxford, QPR against Luton on penalties, Watford against Plymouth and Bolton against Shrewsbury.

There were quite a few wins for teams against higher division opposition.

League One Barnsley beat neighbours Sheffield United and Blackpool did the same to Blackburn. League Two Barrow knocked out Derby on penalties, Fleetwood beat League One Rotherham, third-tier Leyton Orient beat Millwall and League Two Walsall beat Huddersfield.

Three teams hit five goals tonight - all by away teams.

Stoke won 5-0 at Middlesbrough, Preston beat Harrogate 5-0 and Sheffield Wednesday came from behind to win 5-1 at Grimsby.

There were five Premier League teams in action tonight and they won by an aggregate of 17-0.

There were 4-0s for Brighton against Crawley, Leicester against Tranmere and Crystal Palace against Norwich, Everton beat Doncaster 3-0 and Fulham saw off Birmingham 2-0.

Fulham

Fulham goalscorer Jay Stansfield - who spent last season on loan at Birmingham - speaking to Sky Sports: "I feel like I had a warm welcome when I come and it was good to see all the fans again. I wanted to put the shirt on and wear it with pride and luckily I scored.

"It is sort of like a second home so I feel comfortable to put on the shirt and show the fans what I can do.

"I have got respect for the Birmingham fans and the club so I thought it right to keep it [his celebration] cool."

Fulham

Fulham captain Tom Cairney speaking to Sky Sports: "I think most importantly it was about getting minutes in the legs. A few debuts and people who haven't played together before. It was important to come here, do business and that is what we did."

On their second goal: "We know what Joachim [Andersen] can produce from the back and it was a great pass and a nice finish from J."

On ambitions in the Carabao Cup this season: "We would love to go one step further. That was probably the biggest game of the season so when you come that close to a domestic cup final, you want that again."

Fulham capitalised on mistakes from Birmingham in the first half and took their chances.

Birmingham fans will be pleased with what they have seen from their side today and for Fulham, I think they may be a bit frustrated.

Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick: "We lost our way in a 12-minute spell and it was a harsh lesson for our players. It doesn't feel nice but there were a lot of young players on the pitch tonight and they will be better for the experience.

"We will learn a lot from that. You have to be ruthless at both ends of the pitch. I can't accept losing like that."

The Premier League team went strong for this one after losing their first two league games and their class showed against the Championship outfit.

Daichi Kamada opened the scoring early on but the home side couldn't add to their lead before the break.

In-form striker Jean-Philippe Mateta made it two after the interval with an acrobatic finish and then bundled in his second before Eberechi Eze added a late fourth as the Eagles eased through to round three.

Norwich will turn their attentions to getting their league season going after two draws and a defeat from their first three.

Stoke manager Steven Schumacher: "These are nights as a coach you have to enjoy when you can. You get enough really difficult nights but this was a good one.

"We picked a really young team and we were clinical with our chances. Now we get home, recover, get ourselves in tomorrow, rest up, and get ready to go again on Thursday for what's going to be another really tough game down at Plymouth."

No shock here despite Fulham making 11 changes.

It has been a miserable start to the season for Luton Town after their relegation from the Premier League in 2023-24. They are 23rd in the Championship and now out of the Carabao Cup, losing 4-1 on penalties to QPR.

Cauley Woodrow had a penalty saved and Tahith Chong fired his effort against the crossbar, before Kenneth Paal converted his spot-kick to send QPR through via a shootout.

What a shootout!

Ben Jackson fired wide for Derby which meant Kian Spence had the chance to win it for Barrow. His shot was saved but Rams skipper Craig Forsyth then saw his tame effort saved by Paul Farman and League Two Barrow are into round three.

QPR are currently 2-0 ahead in the shootout, with Luton's Cauley Woodrow having his low effort pushed around the post with a fine save by Joe Walsh.

What a comeback! Two quick goals put managerless Blackpool through.
