Our Story
A venture built on a strong foundation.
In 1987, in a small garage in southern Oregon, Blackstone was born. Founded by Craig and Michelle Black, the early days consisted of a small handful of family members and employees working out of their home, building the business one cassette tape at a time. With a fresh perspective on the reading experience, Craig and Michelle, along with their trusted team, found new and innovative methods to produce and distribute audiobooks, and pioneered creative ways to collaborate with publishers, booksellers, and the audiobook listening community. 2022 marked Blackstone’s 35th anniversary, and the company continues to grow, innovate, and further the rise of the audiobook business.

In 2015, building on its legacy as a leading publisher of audiobooks, Blackstone expanded into the world of print books, and now publishes talented writers such as Adrian McKinty, Catherine Ryan Howard, Jeneva Rose, Gabriel García Márquez, Ira Levin, Nicholas Sansbury Smith, Michael Crichton, James Clavell, Don Winslow, R. L. Stine, and many more.
Blackstone titles are printed on-site at company headquarters in Ashland, Oregon, most of its paper coming from mills that source from responsibly managed forests, use minimal chemicals, and are powered by renewable energy sources.
