I have been traveling Bali for a month already. Kuta is not my favorite but amazing place. It is pretty safe area, beach is amazing especially If you are a surfer. All great families here, not much party going on but still great. I had my hair braiding here. They are amazing on that job! Kuta is such a busy spot in Bali, you really need to be able to handle the busy traffic and narrow rds and lanes. The shopping is great and there is a lot of markets with many bargains to find. There is a lot of food on offer and the variety is suited to all taste's. Many places to stay and price's for every budget. The locals are helpful and friendly but you must remember they are trying to make a living from the tourists so be willing to spend your money and help them live. You might see things that are a bit unusuall and different to the way of life from were you come from, this is there way , there home and how its been for many years, so look past it and be kind and enjoy the culture and the happy feel.
