Eight enticing dance events to enjoy before fall

JACOB’S PILLOW DANCE FESTIVAL America’s premier summer dance festival continues in the Berkshires with a lineup featuring the Buenos Aires–based Social Tango Project (July 17-21), Momix returning to the Pillow for the first time since 2002 with the collection “Viva Momix” (July 24-28), Camille A. Brown & Dancers in the world premiere of “I Am” (July 31–Aug. 4), Gibney Company performing Johan Inger’s “Bliss” and Twyla Tharp’s “The Fugue” and “Bach Duet” (Aug. 7-11), Parsons Dance in its first Pillow appearance since 1999 (Aug. 7-11), Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca offering an excerpt from “Searching for Goya” (Aug. 14-18), and Dance Theatre of Harlem with a program that includes George Balanchine’s “Allegro Brillante” and William Forsythe’s “Blake Works IV (The Barre Project)” (Aug. 21-25). THE YARD Martha’s Vineyard’s annual summer dance festival concludes its performance offerings with Ragamala Dance Company (July 19, 7 p.m.) and A.I.M by Kyle Abraham (July 26, 7 p.m.). Ragamala is a Minneapolis-based bharatanatyam troupe led by Ranee Ramaswamy and her daughters Aparna and Ashwini; the Celebrity Series presented Ashwini Ramaswamy this past January in “Let the Crows Come.” At the Yard, Ragamala will perform “Avimukta: Where the Seeker Meets the Sacred.” Abraham’s A.I.M has been a frequent visitor to Boston and Jacob’s Pillow; the company’s Yard program will include “If We Were a Love Song,” which is set to Nina Simone, and the Merce Cunningham–inspired duet “MotorRover.” $15-$55. ORIGAMI NIGHT This choreopoem from Annas-Lee Design Group & Graham Cole/Performance will combine spoken word, dance, and sensory design “to trace a woman’s life from working-class Navy brat to radical feminist to mother.” Elenaluisa Alvarez will be the dancer; actress Luz Nicolás will voice the poetry of UMass-Boston professor emerita Pamela Annas. BOSTON TAP PARTY FACULTY SHOWCASE This year’s Boston Tap Party, featuring open classes and a residency with Josh Hilberman, runs Aug. 1-4 at Deborah Mason Performing Arts Center in Porter Square. The performance highlight will be the Faculty Showcase at Arts at the Armory, with tappers to include Hilberman, Subject:Matter’s Ian Berg, and Dorrance Dance co-dance captain Elizabeth Burke. BATES DANCE FESTIVAL Bates College’s 2024 summer performance series will conclude with Brooklyn-based Tribe’s “Black Hole,” the final installment of choreographer Shamel Pitts’s “BLACK Series” triptych. Pitts founded Tribe as a multidisciplinary arts collective in 2019; “Black Hole,” which the company presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art this past February, combines dance, original sound, video projection, and light design as the trio of Black performers explore “a metaphorical place of transformation and potential.” Aug. 1-2, 7:30 p.m. $15-$35. FEET KEEP THE BEAT: WORLD PREMIERE Now in its second year, the Center for Arts at the Armory’s Feet Keep the Beat Festival will run July 29–Aug. 4 with free dance jams and community workshops. For the performance component, Arts at the Armory commissioned flamenco guitarist Antonio Tran and five local percussive dance artists to create an evening-length work. The lineup will include Ariaki Dandawate (kathak), Yosi Karahashi (flamenco), Joh Camara (West African), Lekisha Limage (step), and Ryan Casey (tap). Aug. 2, 8 p.m. $35. WINDHOVER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS This Rockport multicultural center’s summer dance offerings heat up in August with Janie Brendel & Friends in “Inspired,” a Brahms-set tribute to Howard Gilman’s White Oak dance center (Aug. 2-3, 7:30 p.m.). Margie Gillis and Dance Company follows with a program of solos and duets (Aug. 9-10, 7 p.m.). The season finishes with Boston bharatanatyam teacher and dancer Soumya Rajaram in “An Evening of Bharatanatyam by Soumya Rajaram and Samskrithi Ensemble” (Aug. 16, 7 p.m.). $10-$30. PROVINCETOWN DANCE FESTIVAL Tropical Storm Franklin wiped out last year’s edition, but the Provincetown Dance Festival is back for 2024. The enticing lineup includes Jessie Jeanne Stinnett and Itzik Galili’s Boston Dance Theater, Boston-based Haitian contemporary dance company Jean Appolon Expressions, Boston-native tapper Khalid Hill, New York contemporary outfit Rovaco, Ballet Rhode Island (formerly Festival Ballet Providence), and classical Indian dancers Rachna Agrawal and Laya Raj.
