Peter I arrived early, as I wanted to scope out our table. Susan was right on time.

Susan Peter was there before I was.

Peter Susan has a nice smile and kind eyes, and I thought she was stylishly dressed.

Susan Peter is good-looking, and has kind eyes.

Settling In

Peter Our first order of business was to ask the waitress to move our table. While I was initially directed to a quiet table in the back of the restaurant, a minute or two before Susan arrived, they sat a boisterous group of guys next to us. It quickly became apparent it would be hard to carry on a conversation.

Susan We talked about where each of us lived, our jobs, some of our life experiences, family, travel, and sport interests.

Peter Susan and I covered a gamut of topics on a high level out of the gate. With respect to our families, we both have experienced very hard losses over the past couple of years, as Susan lost both of her parents, and my wife passed away after a courageous two‑year battle with cancer.

Susan I discovered that he recently lost his spouse.

Peter We both have an appreciation for the periods of our lives spent on an island — in Susan’s case on Nantucket, and in my case on Martha’s Vineyard.

Susan We both like the Red Sox and the Celtics. We were both into healthy eating.

Peter We ordered a shellfish appetizer and salads, and for entrees, Susan ordered steak frites and I ordered cod. Both the service and the food were terrific.

Susan The food was excellent, especially the littleneck clams. The restaurant treated us to dessert!

Peter Susan is an attractive woman. She is an upbeat person with positive energy.

Susan Peter is a very kind person and likes to have a fluid conversation. By that I mean someone that likes to talk, but also allows others to talk.

Peter I did feel there was a bit of initial chemistry — to the point where toward the end of our dinner I did ask Susan if she was interested in having dinner again (and she said yes), and she gave me her cellphone number.

Susan It’s really hard to get to know somebody [on] one date. He doesn’t play golf like I do, which was disappointing, but he is active. I was hoping to share my love of the game with a significant other.

Successful Switch

Peter Our dinner continued for almost three hours. We both had busy work days ahead, and it felt like a natural point to end our dinner.

Susan There [was] no mention of doing anything after because it was getting late.

Peter I walked Susan to her car, and we hugged and said our good nights.

Susan He walked with me toward where I was parked.

Second Date?

Peter Yes, I think Susan and I will continue to get to know each other.

Susan I’m not sure at this point.
