Author: Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske

On April 29, CBP and the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate will host a Homeland Security Day in Silicon Valley.

I’m excited about this opportunity to increase our dialogue with the most innovative technology companies and the most visionary investors to discuss new ways to ensure the safety of travelers and secure the global supply chain while facilitating lawful travel and trade.

Technology plays a critical role in identifying and counteracting emerging threats to our homeland. This event will provide a unique forum for technology startups and investors to learn more about CBP’s important mission, how we use technology, and what we need to be as effective and as efficient as possible.

Our challenges are formidable: every day, CBP’s workforce processes more than a million international travelers and more than 72,000 cargo containers. Our agents monitor and patrol thousands of miles of border with aircraft, vehicles, vessels – even horses and canines.

Thanks to events like Homeland Security Day along with funding early stage commercial solutions, S&T can help accelerate the transition of state-of-the-art technology from the drawing board to the front line.
