The Umbrella Academy fans left outraged by 'HORRENDOUS' final season and problematic romance - claiming Netflix show 'cooked up a worse ending than Game of Thrones'

Fans of Netflix hit The Umbrella Academy have been left 'speechless' by the show's 'terrible' fourth and final season, with some furious viewers refusing to acknowledge that it even aired.

The beloved series came to an end when the final batch of episodes dropped on August 8.

However, fans have chosen to pretend that the series 'was cancelled after season 3' because the writers ended up creating 'a worse ending than Game of Thrones.'

The sci-fi drama series, starring Elliot Page, follows a group of disbanded superheroes who reunited after the death of their adoptive father Sir Reginald Hargreaves.

The final season sees the dysfunctional siblings separate after their timeline was reset.

Now devoid of their powers, they are each left to their own human devices to survive, though they must come together one last time to stop a mysterious group known only as The Keepers.

As fans powered through the episodes and learned of the deadly fate met by the siblings as they sacrificed themselves to restore order to the timelines, many flocked to social media to voice their disdain over how the series played out.

'The Umbrella Academy writers cooking up a worse ending than Game of Thrones,' wrote one disappointed fan on X.

Another posted: 'Umbrella academy was terrible like this was the worst season and a terrible series finale 0/10.'

A third fan agreed as they commented: 'You thought Game of Thrones last season was bad? The Umbrella Academy just did a "hold my beer". What a horrendous season 4! Horrible, just horrible!'

'[I don't know] who wrote the last season of umbrella academy but it is by far the laziest finale I have ever watched,' lamented another. 'I can't believe I waited YEARS for this s**t man we should've just ended it with season 3.'

One viewer commented: 'Waited YEARS for season four of the umbrella academy and it was crap'.

'I just got done watching the Umbrella Academy series finale...,' started another. 'That was one of the worst seasons of television I've seen writing-wise. At least Game of Thrones had some cool set pieces. Jesus christ...'

Another stated: 'No bc wtf was the umbrella academy finale I’m actually speechless how awful it was.'

One fan added: 'One thing that sucked about the new season of umbrella academy is that it felt so bland and boring like what happened to doing fun s**t like [the dance battle]'.

'I’d like to formally apologize to the umbrella academy season three,' another noted. 'Had I known the absolute bulls**t that season four was gonna bring I would’ve been nicer to you.'

Another added: 'Season 4 of the Umbrella academy might be the worst ending to a great show I've ever seen, every decision is more confusing than the one before GoT you finally have competition.'

One particular plot point that irked viewers was the very unexpected romance between Five - played by 20-year-old Aidan Gallagher - and Lila - played by Ritu Arya, 35 - who got trapped in a seven-year loop of time travel travel as they fought to get home.

Lila, who is married with children to Five's adoptive brother Diego (David Castañeda), embarked on a romantic relationship with her time-travelling companion - a 64-year-old man stuck inside the body of an 18-year-old.

Viewers were quick to point out that Lila enters into a sexual relationship with Five despite first meeting him as a child, not to mention the fact that she already has a family with his brother.

One horrified fan wrote: 'b***h I was so excited for the umbrella academy but what the actual f**k do you mean FIVE and LILA KISS??!!!??'

Another stated: 'I just... can't with that Lila/ Five stuff. I really can't - why are they doing that. I wanna cry and throw up and scream and unsee that.'

'Five and Lila are in love and I feel a little nauseous,' one viewer lamented.

The show's creator Steve Blackman made the creative decision knowing it could divide fans.

Speaking to Netflix, he said: 'I felt that Five had to have a love story. I mean, he's a 64-year-old man in the body of an 18-year-old. So we thought he could have a love story. And I thought, "How can he have a love story? He's not the kind of guy who's going to date".

'I thought Five needed to be with someone, whether it be a boy or girl. We thought we had an opportunity with Lila. And we tried it. I don't know how the fans are going to take it.'

Steve added that he thought it was important for the pair to kiss because of their difficult dynamic, adding that they're 'extreme opposites and they hate each other' -  but are also 'remarkably similar.'

'I went and had them lost together for seven and a half, almost eight years... [to] see if something grows. And it did grow. By the time they kissed, they're so sweet at that point,' he said.

'You could believe that they would be together. We wouldn’t let them rehearse the kiss. We got him to the point just before the kiss, and then we let them do [it] on the day and it was just perfect.'

However, even some of the cast disapproved of the Five and Lila storyline. David Castañeda - whose character, Diego, is married to Lila - told US Weekly: 'I didn’t understand. I was p*****d off.

'I was angry. I talked to Steve a few times. I was like: "Hey, does this really have to happen?"'
