Scott Mills reveals he was forced to HALT filming for Celebrity Race Across The World after struggling with an 'awful' illness

Scott Mills has revealed that he was forced to briefly stop filming for Celebrity Race Across The World after struggling with an 'awful' illness.

The Radio 2 star, 51, joined forces with his partner Sam Vaughan to go head-to-head with three other celebrity pairs in a race across South America.

However, speaking as the first episode hits screens on Wednesday, Scott has revealed he was forced to give up filming for three days after struggling with 'mad' headaches.

He told Metro: 'I started getting these mad headaches – I don't get headaches – but I was getting really awful ones to the point where one day I said, ''I can't film today, I'm really sorry.''

'Obviously, there was a medic there and he made sure I ate and that I had some tablets to try and get rid of it but it wouldn't go for three days.'

Scott then shared that it was Sam who discovered the cause of his illness, asking whether he'd drank any caffeine in the past few days.

The pair admitted that Scott's reliance on his morning coffee caused huge contention during their South American journey, as it made a huge dent in their tight budget.

In this star-studded editon of the BBC show, Scott and Sam battled against Kelly Brook and husband Jeremy Parisi; Jeff Brazier and son Freddy Brazier; and Kola Bokinni and cousin Mary Ellen to reach the final checkpoint in the fastest time.

Sam added: 'For me, it was frustrating always spending more money on coffee. And he was like, ''Well, I need this to function.'' So I was like, ''Ok, I'll let you have that''.'

Scott added that at times he also struggled with the extremely high temperatures in South America, as well as the language barrier when travelling through Brazil.

The star added that it was 'horrendous' being banned from using his phone during the challenge, but has taken note to lock away his device when he and Sam celebrate thier marriage in October.

After filming Celebrity Race Across The World, Scott and Sam tied the knot in a Barcelona ceremony in June.

The second series of the show's celebrity spin off will feature Ted Lasso stars to iconic TV presenters as they battle it out to reach their final destination without the help of phones or money.

Ted Lasso's Kola Bokinni and his cousin, Mary Ellen will be competing against TV presenter and broadcaster Jeff Brazier and his son, Freddy, 20.

With little more than £1,000 budget, their journey begins in Belém, Northern Brazil - the gateway to the Amazon - and will pass through five checkpoints across the length of South America.

They will do all they can to reach the finish line in the Andes, Frutillar in Southern Chile.

Joining the celebrities will be their nearest and dearest, providing a unique insight into people we thought we knew, through the eyes of those who know them best.

In The Daily Mail's definitive review of the new series, Christopher Stevens welcomed the show's return, joking that it was 'an answer to Britain's overcrowding crisis'.

Celebrity Race Across The World airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
