Privacy

The DHS Privacy Office is responsible for evaluating the Department programs, systems, and initiatives for potential privacy impacts, and providing strategies to reduce the privacy impact.

  • DHS/CBP/PIA-080 CBP Commercial Telemetry Data Evaluation

    The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is conducting this Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) to describe its evaluation of commercially available location data associated with mobile smart devices (“commercial telemetry data”) for a period between December 2018 and September 2023.

  • DHS/CBP/PIA-081 Criminal Case Management System (CCMS)

    CBP is conducting this Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) to assess the potential privacy risks and mitigation measures associated with CCMS because it collects, stores, and uses personally identifiable information (PII) about members of the public.

  • DHS/FEMA/PIA-059 Individual Assistance (IA) Systems

    This Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) focuses on the information technology systems and supporting subsystems used by the Individual Assistance programs. The Individual and Households Program is covered in a separate, forthcoming Privacy Impact Assessment.

  • DHS/ALL/PIA-084 Joint-Threat Information Management System (J-TIMS)

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of the Chief Security Officer (OCSO) is responsible for protecting DHS people, information, and resources against constantly evolving security threats. OCSO maintains the Joint-Threat Information Management System (J-TIMS) to meet this responsibility and manage information from across its Directorates (Threat Management Operations (TMO), Enterprise Security Operations and Support (ESOS), and Headquarters Support).

  • DHS/USSS/PIA-032 eForce (formerly known as Use of Force) Reporting Application System)

    The United States Secret Service (USSS or Secret Service) Use of Force reporting application system, hereafter called eForce, allows USSS law enforcement personnel to input incident data when an agency officer or agent uses any level of force beyond compliant handcuffing, verbal commands, or de-escalation techniques.

  • DHS/CBP/PIA-007 Electronic System for Travel Authorization

    The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an application and screening system used to determine whether citizens and nationals from countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) are eligible to travel to the United States. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is publishing this Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) update for ESTA to provide notice and assess the privacy risks associated with recent enhancements to ESTA, including (1) sharing national identifier numbers received from ESTA applicants with the country that issued the identification numbers, to obtain information about the ESTA applicant as part of the International Biometric Information Sharing (IBIS) Program; and (2) updates to the ESTA mobile application. Recent enhancements to ESTA also include the expanded collection of an applicant’s photograph. July 2024

  • DHS/ALL/PIA-066 DHS Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

    Each Federal Executive Branch agency is required to have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which is a voluntary, confidential program that helps employees and their family members work through various life challenges that may adversely affect job performance, health, and personal well-being. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) EAP services include assessment, counseling, and referrals for employees and family members with personal or work-related concerns such as job stress, financial issues, legal matters, family problems, office conflicts, and alcohol and substance abuse disorders. EAP assistance may be sought by the employee, by a family member, or at the recommendation of an employee’s supervisor.

  • DHS/ALL/PIA-042 CCTV Systems

    DHS and its components deploy a number of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems throughout the department (See Appendix for detailed list).

  • DHS/OIG/PIA-004 TeamMate Application

    The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) is responsible for conducting and supervising independent and objective audits, inspections, evaluations, and investigations to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse and promote economy, effectiveness, and efficiency within DHS programs and activities.

  • Aircraft Systems

    The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) employs several types of aircraft, including manned helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for border surveillance and law enforcement purposes. These aircraft may be equipped with video, radar, and sensor technologies to assist CBP in patrolling the border, conducting surveillance for law enforcement investigations or tactical operations, or gathering data to assist in disaster relief and emergency response.
