Poison Epidemiology

en español

Hands holding up vials of colored liquid.

Our goal is to identify and prevent poisonings in Texas. A poison is anything that can harm your body if you eat, drink, breathe, inject, or touch too much of it.

Some common poisonings include:

  • Taking too much prescription medications
  • Inhaling pesticides
  • Snake bites
  • Illicit drug use

We track poisonings reported in Texas by:

  • Working with the Texas Poison Center Network (TPCN)
  • Investigating clusters of poisonous exposures and related illnesses
  • Monitoring controlled substance overdose surveillance data
