Membership Account Maintenance and Status

When will my membership begin?

Membership is based on a calendar year. If you join a society before September 1, your membership is for the current calendar year. You will receive the affiliated journal's issues that have been published during that calendar year (some of which will be back issues). If you join after September 1, please specify at the time of ordering if your membership is for the current year or for the next year. If you join after September 1, you will have online access immediately but you will not receive a print issues until after January of the next year.

I received a renewal notice, but I have already paid for my membership. Is my membership current?

If you have already renewed your membership by mail or phone, please disregard the renewal notice. If you have questions about the status of your membership, please contact our Customer Relations Department.

When does my membership expire?

Please contact our Customer Relations Department with membership questions.

How do I change my address?

Please contact our Customer Relations Department for address changes to your account.

How do I request a receipt?

Please contact our Customer Relations Department to request a receipt by mail or email.

Member Print Subscriptions

I receive a subscription to a journal as a benefit of membership in my society. When will my subscription begin?

Please contact our Customer Relations Department to find out when your subscription will begin.

When will the most recent issue of my member subscription arrive?

Duke University Press journals ship via surface mail unless otherwise specified. US customers should allow six weeks for delivery from the issue's mailing date. International orders can take ninety days.

How do I request a tracking number for a journal order?

We ship journal subscriptions via USPS surface mail (US) or Globegistics (international), which do not offer tracking numbers.

How do I order a single issue of a journal?

You can order an electronic copy of most single journal issues on a pay-per-view basis. Our humanities and social science content is hosted at read.dukeupress.edu and our mathematics content is hosted at projecteuclid.org. Many print single or special issues are also available on the journal pages. If you are unable to locate the single issue, please submit an inquiry. You can also order single issues by mail, phone, or fax.

To prevent a delay in processing your order, please include the single issue's volume and issue number. You may purchase and pay for your order online using a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express). You may also pay by check or money order (in US dollars, drawn on a US bank) made payable to Duke University Press and mailed to

I think I am missing an issue. How do I request a replacement copy?

Journal subscriptions are shipped by USPS surface mail; please allow six weeks for delivery within the United States and Canada and ninety days for all other international orders. If you feel that you have missed an issue and would like to request a replacement copy, please submit an inquiry. Once you have received email confirmation that your claim has been filled, a replacement copy will be shipped from our warehouse within ten working days. If we are unable to fill your claim for any reason, an explanation will be sent to the email address you have provided on the claim form.

I have not received any issues. What is the status of my member subscription?

I have received a damaged issue. How do I request a replacement copy?

To request a replacement copy, please submit an inquiry. Once you have received email confirmation that your claim has been filled, a replacement copy will be shipped from our warehouse within ten working days. I have received the incorrect issue. How do I request a copy of the correct issue?

Member Electronic Access

Am I eligible for online access to my society's journal as part of my membership?

All membership options include online access. To register, you will need to 
1. Go to read.dukeupress.edu/my-account/register
2. Complete the form to activate your access to your journal(s). Enter your customer number (if you do not have your customer number, please contact our Customer Relations Department). 
3. Click “Register.” 

How do I obtain my customer number for online access?

Your customer number is the same as your Duke University Press account number. This number is located on the mailing label of your print copy of the journal as well as on your renewal notice. If you are unable to locate this number, please contact our Customer Relations Department.

How do I activate my online subscription?

  1. Go to read.dukeupress.edu/my-account/register
  2. Complete the form to activate your access to your journal(s). Enter your customer number (if you do not have your customer number, please contact our Customer Relations Department). 
    3. Click “Register.” 

Membership and Annual Conferences

When I join a society at a conference, when does my membership begin?

It depends on when the conference is held and whether the society has membership requirements for conference attendees or for those who present papers. Membership is based on a calendar year. If you join a society before September 1, your membership is for the current calendar year. You will receive the affiliated journal's issues that have been published during that calendar year (some of which will be back issues). If you join after September 1, please specify at the time of ordering if your membership is for the current year or for the next year. If you join after September 1, you will have online access immediately but you will not receive a print issues until after January of the next year.

Are there any membership requirements for attending my society's annual conference?

Membership requirements for attending a society's annual conference vary by society. Please contact your society directly for more information.

Do I need to join the society to present a paper or attend the annual conference?

Please contact the society regarding annual conference registration and participation requirements.

Do I receive a discount on the annual meeting rate if I am a member?

Please contact the society regarding discounts on the annual meeting registration fee.
