Uncommitted QBs take center stage at The Opening

After decommitting from USC, QB Matt Corral has become one of the summer's most-watched recruits. Tom Hauck for Student Sports

Nike's The Opening is taking place through Monday in Beaverton, Oregon, and puts the top 160 high school football prospects against each other in training and competition. The annual event is star-studded once again with plenty to keep an eye on.

Here is a look at what to watch for:

Quarterbacks
As Elite 11 finalists, the QBs are always the main attraction.

Of the 12 quarterbacks who will be in attendance, only three are uncommitted. Justin Fields, a five-star recruit, is the highest-ranked at No. 4 overall. Fields decommitted from Penn State and is now being targeted by Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia among others. Next is California prospect Tanner McKee, ranked No. 48 overall.

McKee, a Mormon, plans to take a two-year mission trip after high school. That hasn't stopped Alabama, BYU, Washington, UCLA, Texas A&M and others from heavily recruiting him. He and Fields will be joined by Matt Corral, who recently decommitted from USC.

Corral, the No. 85-overall prospect, and the other two uncommitted quarterbacks will have a lot of eyes on them this week. Quite a few programs are waiting with bated breath on their chances with these three.

Uncommitted ESPN 300 prospects
There are 65 uncommitted, ESPN 300 prospects participating in The Opening. That includes nine of the 10 uncommitted five-star prospects.

The five-stars are Fields, defensive end K.J. Henry, cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr., defensive lineman Micah Parsons, cornerback Tyson Campbell, receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., athlete Devon Williams, offensive lineman Jackson Carman and wide receiver Jalen Hall.

Committed prospects usually play recruiter and try to convince the uncommitted prospects to join their team. Those efforts are often aided by the 7-on-7 teams that combine multiple commitments from one team and targets of that same team.

As if Ohio State, currently holding the No. 1 recruiting class, needed any more help recruiting, one team in the 7-on-7 competition is comprised of eight Ohio State commitments. Another is made up of 10 Miami commits. Florida State has five commits on one team and Michigan has four on another.

Those teams will team up on the uncommitted five-stars and some of the bigger uncommitted prospects outside the top 10. That includes ESPN 300 defensive backs Anthony Cook, Tyreke Johnson and Houston Griffith; wide receivers Brennan Eagles, Kamryn Babb and Amon-Ra St. Brown; and tight end Luke Ford among others.

Proving grounds
There are always a few new names that pop up after this event, prospects who weren't talked about much, or recruits who had some question marks around their game. There are some possibilities for those questions to be answered and for recruits hoping for more attention to get a few more eyes on them this week.

One of the bigger prospects who will be in attendance is offensive lineman Daniel Faalele. The IMG Academy offensive lineman is 6-foot-8, 395 pounds, which has garnered a ton of attention. He has offers from Alabama, Michigan, Florida State, Georgia and others, but he is yet to play a single down of high school football.

Faalele transferred to IMG from Australia and has been recognized for his size and potential. He has a chance to go one-on-one against some of the top defensive linemen in the country at The Opening, so a lot of people will be watching how he does and how he takes to the coaching in Oregon.

Wide receiver Gunner Romney is a three-star from Arizona who has some good FBS offers, but not a ton of big programs have come calling. He is the nephew of former NFL tight end Todd Heap and with a good performance at The Opening could see more interest come in.

Receivers always have an opportunity to shine at this event with the 7-on-7 play, so Romney could help his stock if the week goes well.

Underclassmen
The event is mostly for rising seniors, but every year a few underclassmen make the list. Former No. 1 overall prospect Rashan Gary and this year's No. 1 prospect, Xavier Thomas, competed well at the event prior to their junior seasons.

This year's names to watch include three defensive linemen in Zachary Harrison and Jowon Briggs, both from Ohio, and Georgia commit Nolan Smith. Staying in the Midwest, 2019 offensive lineman Devontae Dobbs will be in attendance and has a lot to gain.

Those four will be joined by Georgia linebacker phenom Owen Pappoe, who should be a top-20-level prospect in the 2019 class, and Louisiana running back John Emery Jr.
