About this audiobook
Melody Hurst’s days as a Southern belle are over. Now she’s widowed and alone in the foothills of the Rockies, struggling to make a life in a dangerous world. She’s determined to secure a future by marrying – but love is out of the question.
Cole Baywood has turned bounty hunter after serving in the horrors of the Civil War, but the ghosts of the men and women he’s killed still haunt him. He’s drawn to the beautiful widow trying to seduce him, only the darkness in his soul forces him to reject her. Is it possible that Melody’s touch can heal the demons of his past? And how can he convince a woman who has lost so much to risk her heart?
Editor's Note
Gritty and emotional…
Molly O’Keefe’s gritty, emotional take on a Western historical romance is very different from the mail-order bride and frontier romances of decades past. Set in the post-Civil War West, a widow has to learn how to live without resorting to the flirtatious tricks she acquired as a Southern belle, when that was all that was required from her. Her hero, a bounty hunter, is an ex-soldier who still suffers from the horrors he saw during the war. These two damaged souls find solace in one another.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to have a good plot and set up for the next book. The characters are complex and the narration is excellent. Some readers enjoyed the sarcasm and humor in the book. However, there were mixed opinions about the development of the relationship and the outlook on relationships of one of the characters. Overall, it is a decent story worth reading.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Easy reading, nothing special, and unlike other Molly O'keefe novels.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/53.5 stars
I enjoyed this book and would have rated it higher if it had gone into the actual development of their relationship more. It sort of just felt “default”, like they were just attracted to one another because “they were there”. It was a good plot though, and good set up for the next book. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good writing and build up. It did drag on towards the end. 2 people don't understand the other person likes/loves them. Tale as old as time. Lol
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Nice book. It was so lovely to see Melody choose love and her future. Annie is strong enough to make her way. Cole was so strong and after all he's been through still believed in love.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Gone with the wind plus marvelous romance and sex, minus the slaves and the statues of robert e lee. I hope the civil war 1.0 is not as destructive as the last one. But they now have Kalashnikov. Oh! Well! When you refuse to learn from History you are condemned to repeat it. Bring back the draft, that will wake up every one
Loved the book
NF2 - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I just loved these two! The vulnerability wrapped in the strength that shields both anger and sorrow defines both Cole and Melody. It takes a lot to get through those shields, and both believe nothing will. Slowly, methodically, and over time, the other slips through. Not meaning to, but just by being themselves and spending time together. Once through though, they can let go of everything that has been holding them back and truly be happy again!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The narration totally won me over on this one. For time pieces it was excellent but I have a hard time enjoying the Southern Belle troupe. I adore Annie and can't wait for the next book - yes I looked ahead before reading so that got me through this with a pleasant tone. I laughed out loud at several parts, fully ennjoying Meldoy's sarcasm.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was a decent story and I did enjoy listening to it. The reason I gave it 3 Stars falls mainly on the h and her ridiculous outlook on relationships. I am sure that there are some people who see things as she does but I hope that they are few and far between.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Awesome book throughly enjoyable well worth the read
Complex characters - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5That's a great book what does just something I don't know but it was a great book great story
