First Citizens Customers Report Phishing Attempts
Criminals are impersonating First Citizens associates and targeting customers through texts and phone calls in an attempt to steal personal information.
Some scams appear as text messages urging customers to open a link—often to verify and unlock their account. Don't open these links—doing so could potentially send personal information to the scammer. Instead, report the message as spam or delete it.
Other scams begin with a text message that appears to be from a First Citizens associate requesting that you verify a transaction. If you respond to the text, you receive a phone call from an individual claiming to be from First Citizens, and the caller ID displays a legitimate First Citizens phone number. The caller offers to help you dispute the transaction, then says that you'll receive another text message with a code that's needed to verify either the transaction or your identity. During the call, you may be asked to provide additional personal information such as your date of birth, mother's maiden name or Digital Banking user ID.
Please be aware:
- While First Citizens does send texts to verify debit card transactions, we never follow up a text with a phone call.
- We never call a customer to request codes or other sensitive personal information.
- We will never request a fund transfer between your First Citizens accounts or external accounts.
- Account numbers, user IDs, passwords and other sensitive information should never be shared over the phone with an unsolicited caller.
- Phone numbers on caller IDs can be spoofed and shouldn't be accepted as legitimate.
If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from First Citizens and asking for your account or other sensitive information, please end the call and immediately call us at 866-567-7760 or visit your local branch.
