Abir Mukherjee is the Times bestselling author of the Sam Wyndham series of crime novels set in Raj era India. His debut, A Rising Man, won the CWA Endeavour Dagger for best historical crime novel of 2017 and was shortlisted for the MWA Edgar for best novel. His second novel, A Necessary Evil, won the Wilbur Smith Award for Adventure Writing and was a Zoe Ball Book Club pick. His third novel, Smoke and Ashes, was chosen by the Sunday Times as one of the 100 Best Crime & Thriller Novels since 1945. Abir grew up in Scotland and now lives in London with his wife and two sons.

That's a great question.
In truth, I haven't read anywhere near as much American crime fiction as I should have. I was brought up in the traditions of Tartan Noir and the English Agatha Christie style crime writing, though I do enjoy American hard-boiled crime. My favourite US author though, has to be Martin Cruz-Smith. I adore his Arkady Renko series set in Communist era Moscow. Indeed, his novel, Gorky Park, is one of my all-time favourites.(less)

Dear Sir: I much enjoyed "A Rising Man" and "A Necessary Evil" is here at home. I'm now reading a fiction and/or 'nf' work by an author born in every country: my goal is depth of cultural knowledge. (I feel there is often as much truth in 'fiction' as in 'nf',) May I ask your country of birth? I do understand a reticence: privacy is important. In answer to your question, my parents came from India, and I was born in London but moved to Scotland when I was very young. As such, I feel far more Scottish than I do English, and consider myself a British-Asian. Hope that helps!
