It's been a difficult couple of years but nothing about my experience is unique, some people close to me have gotten very sick and I've struggled to adjust to being a full-time author (it can be an extremely unhealthy job, as some famous authors of the past have demonstrated). But it would be crazy for me to complain in public when, at the end of the day, I'm getting paid a lot of money to stay at home and make up funny stories. (less)

Whenever they reveal the movie/album/novel of theirs they're most proud of, it's never my favorite, as a fan, and it makes me feel like I'm enjoying their work wrong. Or if they do the opposite, like if there's some song that changed my life as a teen and the lead singer does an interview like, "Oh, yeah, we were surprised that was a hit, that was just a throwaway track we added to the album at the last minute. Basically Steve came up with this guitar riff and I just made up some words, we recorded it in 20 minutes."

This may seem weird but just in general I'm really cautious about saying something about my own work that may make people enjoy it less, or make them feel like their interpretation of it was wrong. Even when talking about the process I try never to say things like, "Well I considered killing off this character but changed my mind" because I think the reader prefers to think of these stories as being "true" in the sense that they couldn't ever exist in another form, and it messes with that when you talk about what went into a specific decision etc. It kind of ruins the magic, I guess.

Usually instead of saying all that I'll just say something like, "They're all my favorites!" (less)

Oh no just to be clear: there are no supernatural or sci-fi elements to this upcoming novel! It is a ticking-clock thriller that takes place present day, in our world! So yeah it was always its own idea, I'd been thinking about it for years and am ho See Full Answer

“Hi Mom. I just wanted to let you know I’m okay. I don’t know if you watch the news but it looks like I inherited like a billion dollars in drug money or something. Can you find a lawyer? Just tell him I’m in danger of getting murdered or going to jail for having a bunch of heroin warehouses and mafia money that I didn’t even ask for, so whatever he can do to fix that would be great—SHUT UP! Sorry, I wasn’t talking to you, Arthur’s robot toilet is hassling me. Oh also my bodyguard shot a guy last night, hope that’s okay. He had super powers, they all do. I don’t know what’s up with that. Anyway, call me.”
Well, that should set her mind at ease.”
Jason Pargin, Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits

“I don’t want you shooting anybody today,” said Amy, “even if solving a complicated problem by shooting it is just about the most American thing I can imagine. We have to get the guy to stay willingly.”
Jason Pargin, If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe

“Sometimes when life’s Warning Light won’t stop flashing, the best thing you can do is just put some electrician’s tape over it.”
