I'm not sure if you read fantasy but I think the All Our Hidden Gifts series is very close to The Rachel Incident in the sense that it focuses on young people in small town Ireland. The first few chapters of AOHG reads very young, so it might not strike you as 'for you' immediately, but I think the themes and the characters and the writing matures very quickly. The characters are very flawed yet, I think, loveable. I'm especially proud of books 2 & 3. Hope this helps! (less)

I think Fire & Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones, a book that I read last year and haven't been able to stop thinking about since. It's an epic fantasy while also being a very ordinary story of a girl growing up and falling in love, and it has some of the most arresting visuals of any novel I've ever read – the first scene is two little girls, gatecrashing a funeral dressed as high priestesses, and it only gets weirder from there. It would be a fairly controversial adaptation given that it's mostly about the budding romance between a young teenager and an adult man over many years, but I think completely worth the challenges and conversations it would bring up. I feel as though I’ve read many, many books in the past couple of years where the main character does a couple of morally iffy things and then spends the bulk of the third act apologising and taking their friends out to dinner. “Yeah man, that was pr ...more

“When something good happens to you at that age, you can’t settle with the notion that it’s a one-off. You want it to be the beginning of a tradition. That’s how I felt about that night: I wanted it already to be a memory, a foundational one, a first evening of many similar evenings. I wanted future nostalgia, a rear-view, years-old fondness for something that had literally just happened.”
Caroline O'Donoghue, The Rachel Incident

“I was twenty and I needed two things: to be in love and to be taken seriously.”
Caroline O'Donoghue, The Rachel Incident

“I don’t know who I was trying to impress. I did not want a boyfriend; I did want romance. I wanted passion; I did not want to be someone who was known as easy. I was desperate to be touched; I was terrified of being ruined.”
Caroline O'Donoghue, The Rachel Incident
