#1 New York Times bestselling author Erin A. Craig has always loved telling stories.

After getting her B.F.A. from the University of Michigan, in Theatre Design and Production, she stage managed tragic operas with hunchbacks, séances, and murderous clowns, then decided she wanted to write books that were just as spooky.

An avid reader, decent quilter, rabid basketball fan, and collector of typewriters, brass figurines, and sparkly shoes, Erin makes her home in West Michigan with her husband and daughter.

She is represented by Sarah Landis at Sterling Lord Literistic.

I began writing House of Salt and Sorrows shortly after my daughter was born. I was a new stay-at-home mama and in those bleary-eyed early days, a fragment of a story kept haunting me … an island estate, shrouded in fog, shadows and dark, dark secrets. The idea wouldn’t leave me alone, but I wasn’t fully convinced there was an entire plot within it. Sorting through some boxes of old keepsakes one day, I came across a picture of 10-year-old me playing the role of the soldier in my sister’s Girl Scout troop’s production of The Twelve Dancing Princesses and the story clicked into place from there.(less)

My Pinterest boards are littered with dark forests and creepy, deserted beaches.

Once the setting is in place, I find it best to write a bit throughout the day, each and every day. I wake up early, write through my daughter's naps, and try to reread everything from that day before I go to bed. It helps me think about where to go next when I wake up!(less)

“Nights like this were meant to be shared, remembered, and talked about for years. Skies like this were meant to be kissed under.”
Erin A. Craig, House of Salt and Sorrows

“Flushed with starlight and moonlight drowned,
All the dreamers are castle-bound.
At midnight’s stroke, we will unwind,
Revealing fantasies soft or unkind.
Show me debauched nightmares or sunniest daydreams.
Come not as you are but as you wish to be seen.”
Erin A. Craig, House of Salt and Sorrows

“We are born of the Salt, we live by the Salt, and to the Salt we return.”
